Overview 

The VP of Technology & Innovation is responsible for creating and deploying enterprise-wide innovation strategies that enhance Summit Materials’ overall corporate strategy to create value for our customers, employees, shareholders and communities where we operate. This executive will be a key member of the Strategy & Growth senior leadership team.

This position requires a dynamic leader with rigorous quantitative analysis and qualitative insights to help define top-level innovation strategies that span the Company’s lines of businesses (aggregates, cement, supplementary cementitious materials, concrete, asphalt and construction services). This role closely partners with the Corporate & Business Strategy teams to supplement market trends with relevant technology trends.

This role is responsible for creating an enterprise innovation program from the ground-up. This includes deploying phase-gate & agile processes into businesses, monitoring pipeline performance, and overseeing the innovation organization and talent. This role facilitates the identification of new, market-back and high value innovation initiatives, as well as identifying opportunities to accelerate local innovation initiatives with an enterprise-wide applicability.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Direct management of managers, as well as dotted-line management of direct leads within the various businesses.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and deploy innovation methodologies & tools across Summit’s businesses which includes overseeing the enterprise-wide innovation pipeline including prioritization, staffing, and funding.
  2. Collaborate with strategy, business and functional leaders to establish the overall innovation strategy.
  3. Identify potential adjacent opportunities via partnership with senior leadership and constructively challenging “where to play” and “how to win” choices.
  4. Identify industry trends, evaluate emerging technologies and assess early-stage companies to guide business and investment opportunities.
  5. Partner with business technology and quality teams to develop technology roadmaps.
  6. Foster a culture of innovation and establish a cross-functional innovation community.
  7. Establish innovation center(s) to drive collaboration and accelerate time to value; induce labs footprint, as well as organization and capabilities optimization
  8. Lead the formation of external partnerships and collaborations with public and private institutions.
  9. Manage the research and development shared services agreement, including instigating new projects as necessary.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Proven 15+ years of experience as a strategic business executive in developing and deploying competitively differentiated, innovation strategies that have resulted in tangible organic growth.

Other:

  • Proven track record leading innovation and/or research and development functions in large, multi-line of business organizations with measurable strategic and financial results.
  • Directly led cross-functional teams, including external advisors and partners on innovation programs.
  • Strong analytical skills – ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative information to support complex hypotheses and data driven decisions.
  • Demonstrated business development experience, including leading external partnership development.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams in the development of innovation investment cases, competitive products/services benchmarking, value proposition development, and comprehensive financial models.
  • Has created and delivered senior executive level presentations.
  • Transparent and accessible leadership style with strong influencing skills and the capability to earn credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Results driven with a strong work ethic and high sense of urgency. Ability to succeed in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Preferred Experience:

  • MBA or PhD strongly preferred
  • Building materials experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
