The Groundsman Level B is responsible for supporting the assigned crew as needed.  This is the entry-level for the Groundsman role.  Responsible for supporting the assigned crew as needed.  Responsibilities will include learning chainsaw fundamentals, cutting, staging, chipping and/or mulching brush.  Learning job site awareness and environmental compliance. Work may be performed within the minimum approach distance of energized electrical lines.

Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Responsibilities will include learning chainsaw fundamentals, cutting, staging, chipping and/or mulching brush.  
  • Work under supervision to safely trim trees, chip brush, and move vegetative material
  • Learning job site awareness and environmental compliance.
  • Must be able to work within the minimum approach distance to energized power lines
  • Assist crew members with gear setup and maintenance
  • Assist climbers with gear preparation and inspection, setup, and aerial work-related tasks
  • Safely and efficiently operate light equipment such as chainsaws, weed eaters, pole trimmers, and blowers.
  • Safely and efficiently learn to operate chippers, vehicles, and aerial lifts/bucket trucks from the ground
  • Maintain basic knowledge of tree workers aerial climbing techniques and activities
  • Must be able to learn all aspects of trailer hauling and towing
  • Maintain and implement safe work practices in accordance with industry standards or policies
  • Must be able to regularly lift 50lbs or more
  • Must be able to work outdoors, year-round in varying environments
  • Must be able to work in, around, and amongst poisonous plants and noxious vegetation
  • Discuss traffic routing plans, type, and location of control points with supervisor
  • Observe and assist in installing the traffic control plan
  • Designate flaggers to release traffic at beginning of operation on either closed lane or open lane ends
  • Complete safe turns in designated location at end of traffic control zones
  • Observe traffic control devices to ensure in accordance with backup of traffic control que
  • Communicates with cutting crew to hold traffic and restart again based on 20-minute time limit and operations of cutting crew
  • Be familiar with the installation of a Temporary Lane Closure
  • Be familiar with the different section of a Temporary Lane Closure and the purpose of each section
  • Be familiar with Traffic Control Devices in reference to Distance and Position.
  • Be familiar with Safe Positioning of Flagger Stations in reference to Traffic Control for a Temporary Lane Closure.
  • Be familiar with the required Advance Warning Signs and their purpose
  • Be familiar with the order of installation, direction of installation and the direction of removal, for Advance Warning Signs/Devices
  • Know the required Hand Signals in alerting the Traveling Public in a Temporary Lane Closure
  • Have knowledge of a Safe Stopping Distance of a designated roadway for a Temporary Lane Closure.
  • Know when to use a Stop/Slow Paddle vs a Flag for Traffic Control
  • A Certified PCD in Oregon shall maintain an ODOT Flagger Certification renewable every 3 Years, for current status
  • Observe safety and security procedures; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly
  • Daily attendance
  • Follow all policies and procedures and meet all performance goals
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: Less than 6 months experience performing a physical labor position
  • Valid Driver License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work under supervision to safely trim trees, chip brush, and move vegetative material
  • Commercial Driver License: Class A , B or Heavy 8
  • Qualified Applicator License (QAL)
  • Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC)

Travel:

  • This position is expected to travel to project sites and locations within Puerto Rico (includes Vieques and Culebra)

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places and extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Sites can be very hot and dusty.
