Sioux Falls Food Co-op is a cooperatively owned grocery store on the edge of downtown Sioux Falls. More than just a grocery store, the co-op is a place where community is built. Our Deli is a destination not to be missed for delicious house made salads, soups, sandwiches and more.

Our next leader will be someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, strong financial acumen, and a willingness to try new things. We are looking for a leader who is keen on systems and process development and knows how to build a team and nurture a community. We are seeking an experienced generalist who can comfortably wear a lot of hats within the organization and who strongly embraces cooperative principles and values.

Overview of Responsibilities

The General Manager has the authority to hire, direct, structure, and evaluate all co-op staff members and is solely responsible for oversight of store operations. The General Manager is empowered to make decisions, create policies, authorize operational engagements, and provide direction and execution in the following areas, including but not limited to:

Financial and Planning

The GM directs all financial operations of the co-op including preparing and managing operating, cash, and capital budgets for the Board. The GM is also responsible for long-range, strategic planning as well as annual operational plans.

 Operations

The GM will maintain knowledge of natural foods retailing and industry trends as well as plan and execute operational strategies designed to maintain adequate profit to ensure a growing business. The GM is also responsible for ensuring proper maintenance of the store facility and equipment.

Marketing

The GM will maintain and ensure a positive public image for the co-op, work with staff to plan promotions, merchandising and product mix as well as ensure communications with co-op owners and shoppers.

Human Resources

The GM is responsible for oversight of all aspects of the HR function to ensure a safe, healthy workplace for employees. They also hire, supervise, and evaluate all members of the management team.

Reporting Relationships

The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors, which is elected by the members of the co- operative. The Board uses Policy Governance, a system within which the Board uses policy to define the results the General Manager is expected to achieve within defined limits of prudence and ethics. This governance model emphasizes vision and values, empowerment, and accountability.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong business acumen with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of financial management and reporting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with team leadership and development.
  • Experience with business planning and strategic thinking.
  • Experience as manager in a retail food store and/or fresh prepared foods operation, or transferable experience.
  • Commitment to cooperative values and structure.
  • Solid understanding of administrative and operational systems in a retail environment.
  • Willing and able to hold others accountable.

  • Carries out operational and strategic tasks with a service mindset, demonstrating attention to internal and external service needs.

Physical Demands

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Environment: Work is performed primarily in a grocery store setting with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions.

Salary and Benefits

  • $75,000-$110,000 commensurate with experience
