The Family Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Specialist, under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of Integrated & Behavioral Health, is responsible for the guidance and management of Family Focused Recovery’s Community-Based and Outpatient Services. This individual will co-lead a team and directly supervise 3 New Orleans Peer Recovery Coaches (NOPRCs) in providing crisis intervention, assessment, person-centered care planning, therapy, peer support, and coordination of care for pregnant and parenting women who use substances and their minor children. This individual will work closely with other supervisory and administrative staff to ensure efficient and high-quality service provision for all persons served by Family Focused Recovery (FFR).

This individual will support the opening of Family Focused Recovery’s Residential Center.


  1. Support the Assistant Vice President of Integrated & Behavioral Health in the successful completion of the Implementation and Evaluation Phases of the Regional Partnership Grant (RPG), including adherence to RPG Research requirements.
  2. Work closely with other supervisory and administrative staff to ensure the provision of team-based care for all persons served is high quality, efficient, and in compliance with all accreditation and funding source requirements.
  3. Lead team in developing a network of agency contacts who serve women and educate them about VOASELA’s services and FFR Program offerings.
  4. Provide onsite screening and assessments at juvenile, drug, and other court settings, child welfare agencies, health clinics, physician offices, and other agencies.
  5. Support Program Assistant and Family Greeter/Receptionist in addressing all incoming phone, email, and fax referrals to ensure timely screening and admission of eligible persons to FFR.
  6. Upon admission of persons served to VOASELA’s FFR Program, conduct required assessment and screening instruments to diagnose persons served with behavioral health disorders and develop person-centered care planning with persons served to guide service delivery in line with best practices based on the individualized needs of each person served. 
  7. Provide direct counseling and crisis intervention services to persons served, utilizing individual, family, group, and IOP interventions.
  8. Provide training and supervision to NOPRCs to ensure the provision of peer support and care coordination services is in line with best practices. In collaboration with the FFR team, facilitate the development of the NOPRC Model.
  9. Record accurate information on each person served in VOASELA’s Electronic Health System in a timely manner. Ensure accurate, timely, and quality data entry is completed by NOPRCs.
  10. Keep current in the arena of substance use disorder treatment, specifically trends in opioid maintenance treatment and harm reduction.
  11. Provide education, training, and support to staff on harm reduction, withdrawal management services, medication-assisted treatment, risk management practices, and other topics as needs dictate.
  12. Collaborates with community partners regarding care, opioid education, and case management.


  • Assists VOASELA and FFR staff in creating and maintaining a recovery-oriented environment.
  • Provides support to all FFR program activities, including Child Watch.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • New Orleans Peer Recovery Coaches (NOPRCs)



This position requires knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:

  • At least 2 years of experience working with women experiencing substance use disorders.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Successful completion of Peer Support Specialist Supervisor training (may be completed after hire).
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practices. Dedication to the creation of a racially equitable continuum of care for pregnant and parenting women who use substances and their children.
  • Extensive knowledge of the substance use disorder continuum of care available in the Greater New Orleans area.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Expertise within Electronic Health Systems.
  • Ability to interact with staff at all levels in a respectful manner, remaining flexible, proactive, and task-oriented.
  • Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, accuracy, flexibility, reliability, and prioritizing skills.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and CFR 42 Part 2.
  • This position provides services in office, in community settings and via telehealth.
  • This position may transport persons served occasionally using personal or agency vehicle.




  • Master’s Degree in social work or counseling and current Louisiana licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Maintenance of all requirements to provide telehealth services on an ongoing basis.
  • Current driver’s license issued by state of residence.
  • Current Vehicle Inspection decal.
  • Current vehicle insurance.
  • Current vehicle registration in state of residence.
  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history investigation (not all convictions will exclude candidates from being hired).
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must complete TB screening and testing on an annual basis.
  • Must be able to main CPR certification.
