Public Works Maintenance Specialist

The City of Brandon, SD seeks an individual with strong mechanical aptitude, experience with equipment and vehicle operations, and a solid work history to join our Public Works Department as a Maintenance Specialist.  

This position includes working with water and waste-water systems, street maintenance and snow removal, and maintenance of city facilities and public areas.  

Responsibilities include: 

  • General Maintenance: concrete work, landscaping, site maintenance, equipment operations (dump truck, snow plow, sander, loaders, etc.)
  • Water Maintenance: water system operations, wells, water treatment, storage and distribution lines, water meters, etc.
  • Waste-water Maintenance: waste-water system operations, including collection lines, pumping, storage and treatment facilities, testing and recording water flows, operating sewer truck, etc.
  • Street Maintenance: maintenance and repair of city streets, curbs, gutters, storm sewers, sidewalks; assist with patching and resurfacing, snow removal, etc.
  • On-Call Service Response: will become part of 'on-call' rotation to respond to emergency city services

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in performing manual and semi-skilled work; must lift and carry up to 100 pounds; strenuous physical activity at times
  • Working knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in one or more work areas above
  • Strong mechanical aptitude; equipment and vehicle operations 
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance activities without close supervision
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to successfully complete written examinations required in the classification of water and waste-water operators
  • Ability to work with other City employees and the general public
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to obtain within 6 months

In this position you must be able to work inside and outside, throughout the year, in varying weather conditions.

Pay starting at $21.33/hour + depending on qualifications.
