JOB SUMMARY

The Comptroller will handle high-level accounting, managerial accounting, and oversee the financial activities of the company. As head of the accounting department, the Comptroller will manage and supervise all aspects of accounting from payroll to tax compliance. The Comptroller will report to the Chief Financial Officer and will assist with the development of internal control policies, procedures, and financial planning as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Manage all aspects of accounting, billing, financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, tax compliance, inventory accounting, revenue recognition, and various special analyses
  • Maintain documented system of accounting policies and operations
  • Manage the work of staff and ensure that assignments, reports, and records are completed accurately and according to established standards and timelines.
  • Prepare 13 Week Cash Forecast on a biweekly basis.
  • Prepare and submit annual operating budgets.
  • Present monthly financial statements.
  • Prepare, review and present account reconciliations to Chief Financial Officer.
  • Lead the organization’s preparation and response to all audits, including, but not limited to: HUD Audits and/or Management and Occupancy Reviews, Louisiana Medicaid Cost Reporting Audit, and Annual Financial and Single Audit.
  • Lead the preparation and/or review of monthly and annual reporting to Volunteers of America Inc.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding finances, tax filings, and reporting
  • Maintain the confidentiality of financial and payroll data
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

This position requires knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting 

  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible work experience to include at least five years of accounting experience and at least two years of experience at middle management level. 
  • CPA license preferred
  • Must have excellent supervisory skills, the ability to motivate staff and ensure that staff is meeting expected results and scheduled timelines
  • Leadership and team building skills
  • Strong professional ethics which include approaching others in a tactful manner; reacting well under pressure; treating others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position
  • Strong working knowledge of the Agency’s Abila MIP fund accounting software as well as Microsoft Office products – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. 
  • Ability to work some flexible hours is required, specifically during year end audit, forecast and budget preparation

Work is primarily performed in a normal office environment generally while seated at a desk.  Dexterity is required to performing work with personal computer keyboard, calculator and other office equipment
