Job Overview

We are recruiting a Lead Estimator to join our team in Sherwood Park, AB.  As a Lead Estimator, you are responsible for preparing accurate construction estimates while also overseeing and supporting the estimating team members through the development of their estimates and related proposal components. The Lead Estimator will support the team members in activities related to the analysis, cost estimation, scheduling, subcontractor and supplier communications, collaboration with operation teams, and meeting support for projects to ensure accuracy and competitiveness in our bids.

Responsibilities 

  • Lead and support the Estimating team to prepare estimates and provide training where necessary
  • Prepare and present estimates to management and supports estimators in their preparation and presentation of estimates
  • Prepare material, labour and equipment cost estimations necessary to successfully carry out a construction project according to proposals, plans, estimates, and specifications
  • Prepare cost summaries that include costs of subcontracts, overhead, taxes, insurance, markup, and anything else that might affect the cost of a construction project
  • Analyze, review and evaluate proposal contracts, specifications and drawings
  • Consult with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, as needed
  • Determine material, equipment and labour requirements for sequence of operations and projected timelines
  • Prepare construction progress schedules
  • Develop and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors
  • Obtain subcontractor and/or supplier quotations; record and compare quotations
  • Conduct negotiations with subcontractors and suppliers, as needed
  • Oversee and prepare appropriate deliverables for each tender proposal, support estimating team members in their preparation of deliverables
  • Provide advice on tendering procedures and make recommendations regarding quotes from subcontractors / suppliers
  • Evaluate and recommend allowances for indirect costs, design unknowns, escalation and contingency
  • Attend and lead pre-tender meetings, strategy reviews, estimate reviews, and tender closing meetings
  • Assist in final presentation of tender packages to senior management
  • Collect historical cost data to estimate costs
  • Assist in post tender clarification responses
  • Price and negotiating change orders

Requirements

  • A combination of related education and experience in Industrial, Mechanical, Pipeline or Civil Contracting in the Oil & Gas industry is required 
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in Civil or Industrial Estimation is required
  • A related journeyman certificate or post-secondary diploma in construction technology is considered an asset
  • Engineering degree or diploma is considered an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of cost coding structures from estimate through project completion
  • Supervisory experience leading an Estimating team or Project Managment experience will be considered
  • Strong computer background including experience with MS Office and related estimating software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Experience with estimating and scheduling software such as Heavy Bid, Bluebeam, Primavera P6
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Knowledge of modern construction practices, techniques and equipment
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills in a deadline driven environment 
  • Flexible to work extended hours upon request
  • Must pass pre-employment alcohol and drug test including cannabis
