The City of Canton, South Dakota is seeking to hire a full-time Police Chief. The Police Chief is the chief administrative and police officer of the City’s Police Department, and is responsible for the overall operation and function of the department, including the coordination of law enforcement and other public safety services for the City of Canton; selection, training and supervision of personnel; financial management; and public relations with the community.
Here's what you'll get to do!
Operations
- Conduct and supervise law enforcement activities within the City’s jurisdiction, including administrative, patrol and investigative activities, including
- Respond to public calls for assistance
- Conduct and supervise routine patrols; enforce criminal, civil and traffic laws; conduct investigations
- Conduct and supervise accident investigation, speed enforcement, impaired driving enforcement
- Conduct and supervise report writing, correspondence, and preparation of evidentiary material
- Oversee community policing programs: Bike Rodeo, Pet Vaccination program etc.
- Act as liaison with county, state and federal agencies involved in law enforcement matters and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with other criminal justice systems
- Assess department needs related to staffing, training, equipment, policies and procedures; advise and make recommendations to the Public Safety Commissioner
- Conduct emergency/disaster management planning and preparation for the City
- Work with legal counsel regarding any legal issues involving the department
- Attend staff meetings and/or Department Head meetings as required
Financial
- Oversee the preparation and administration of the department’s annual budget
- Assure that purchases and expenditures are within budgetary guidelines and restrictions
- Seek, write and administer grants for department projects as available
Public Relations
- Provide information to the public as needed, as required, and as thoroughly as possible
- Investigate and respond to public inquiries, complaints and concerns timely and tactfully
- Represent the City at meetings with federal, state, and other local government officials
- Participate in a variety of boards, committees and professional organizations
- Attend a wide variety of professional and public meetings to represent and promote the City
Staff Supervision
- Select, train, schedule and supervise department staff
Provide supervision and regular performance evaluation to direct reports
- Determine and implement corrective action, suspension and termination of employment when warranted
- Adjust employee responsibilities and update positions descriptions as needed
- Make recommendations to the Public Safety Commissioner regarding staff
- Develop effective communication systems with staff, Commission, other Department Heads
Here's what you'll need!
Education and Work Experience
- BA/BS degree in Criminal Justice, or related field preferred
- Five to seven years of law enforcement experience with advanced law enforcement training required
- Must have experience with budgets, financial statements, financial administration and grants
- Must have previous management and supervisory experience
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Must be proficient and qualified with firearms, police communications equipment and other law enforcement equipment typically used in department activities
- Must be proficient with office technology and able to effectively use a variety of applications including Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, e-mail and internet
- Excellent written and verbal skills, including speaking and presentation skills, required
- Must have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to adapt to various situations and people
Physical Capabilities
- Wide variety of physical activity required: office activities, driving, extended periods of sitting, standing or walking, and occasional situations requiring high degree of stress and physical exertion
- Must have ability to work in light and dark conditions; inside and outside activities in all types of weather; irregular hours and schedule
- Requires daily driving; some travel to business meetings, conferences or worksites
- Must be able to operate normal office equipment, review work products, file and retrieve files
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license; safe driving record
- Law enforcement certification by the state of South Dakota
