Job Description
The mechanic will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of our fleet of vehicles and equipment. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and a dedication to ensuring the safety and reliability of our transportation assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered trucks, vans, and heavy equipment used in roofing operations.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in vehicles and equipment and develop effective repair plans.
- Conduct major and minor engine repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls, including but not limited to engines, transmissions, brakes, and suspension systems.
- Implement and manage a preventive maintenance program to ensure the ongoing reliability and safety of our vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of parts and supplies inventory and order necessary parts in a timely manner.
- Ensure that all vehicles and equipment are in compliance with safety and emissions regulations.
- Provide guidance and support to junior mechanics and assist in their training and development.
- Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repairs performed, including work orders, maintenance logs, and service reports.
- Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergency repair requests, both in the field and at the company’s facilities.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or certification in diesel mechanics preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, with a proven track record of working on diesel engines and heavy equipment.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and practices related to diesel mechanics.
- Valid commercial driver license (CDL) or willingness to obtain one.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy objects and work in various weather conditions.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to mentor junior mechanics.
- Willingness to keep up to date with advancements in diesel engine technology through continuing education and training.
Physical Demands
- Lifting and Carrying: Diesel mechanics frequently need to lift and carry heavy tools, parts, and equipment, which can weigh up to 50 pounds or more. This includes items like tires, engines, and other components.
- Standing and Walking: The job often requires extended periods of standing and walking around the workshop or construction sites while inspecting, repairing, or maintaining vehicles and equipment.
- Bending and Stooping: Mechanics must bend, stoop, and kneel to access various parts of vehicles and equipment, including undercarriages and engine compartments.
- Climbing: Climbing onto and inside vehicles or equipment may be necessary for inspections and repairs. This may involve climbing ladders or steps.
- Reaching and Stretching: Mechanics may need to reach overhead or stretch to access specific areas for maintenance or repair work.
- Manual Dexterity: Precise hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are essential for working with small parts, tools, and intricate components.
- Working in Confined Spaces: Some maintenance tasks may require mechanics to work in confined spaces within vehicles or equipment.
- Exposure to Environmental Conditions: Diesel mechanics are often exposed to various environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind, depending on the location and time of year.
- Noise and Vibrations: The job environment can be noisy due to running engines and heavy machinery, and mechanics may be exposed to vibrations from equipment.
- Safety Gear: Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, and steel-toed boots is essential to ensure safety.
- Crouching and Crawling: Mechanics may need to crouch or crawl to access hard-to-reach areas, especially when working underneath vehicles.
- Pushing and Pulling: Moving heavy equipment or vehicles may require pushing, pulling, or using mechanical aids such as jacks or hoists.
