SENIOR CONTROLS ENGINEER
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Controls Engineer specializing in Automated Material Handling (AMH) is a technical leader responsible for the design, development, implementation, and optimization of advanced control systems for automated material handling solutions. This role requires in-depth expertise in PLC programming, motion control, robotics integration, and industrial network communication, with a focus on delivering efficient, reliable, and high-throughput material handling systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Leadership and Collaboration:
- Lead projects and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technical teams.
- Work closely with project teams to ensure successful outcomes, providing support during all phases, including design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Provide guidance when necessary for electrical control panel builds, field wiring, and any pneumatic or hydraulic plumbing.
- Participate in equipment conceptual development, balancing product specifications, process requirements, cost, and lead-time limits.
- Provide support to sales group for project estimates and technical proposal development as necessary
AMH System Design and Development:
- Design and develop control systems for AMH equipment, including conveyors, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and robotic palletizers/depalletizers.
- Develop control strategies for complex material flow, sortation, and tracking systems.
- Select and integrate sensors, actuators, and other control components specific to AMH applications.
- Create detailed control system designs, including electrical schematics, network diagrams, and HMI layouts.
PLC and Motion Control Programming:
- Develop and optimize PLC programs for AMH system control, focusing on high-speed material handling and precise motion control.
- Program and configure motion control systems for robotic and automated equipment.
- Implement advanced control algorithms for optimizing material flow and minimizing downtime.
Robotics and System Integration:
- Integrate robotic systems with AMH equipment, including robotic picking, palletizing, and material transfer applications.
- Develop and implement communication protocols for seamless integration between PLCs, robots, and other AMH devices.
- Work with vision systems and other sensor technologies for accurate material identification and handling.
EDUCATION & TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or industrial engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in control systems engineering within the automated material handling industry.
- Travel: 15-40% project schedule dependent.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of motion control systems.
- Experience with robotics integration (e.g., Fanuc, ABB).
- Proficiency in industrial network communication protocols.
- Experience with HMI/SCADA development.
- Knowledge of AGV systems.
- Familiarity with industry standards (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI) and safety requirements.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with warehouse control systems (WCS) integration.
- Experience with machine vision systems.
- Fanuc handling Tool, Fanuc RoboGuide, ABB Robot Studio.
- AutoCad Electrical, Eplan
- Structured Programming Languages (C++, Java, Python, etc.)
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role is $100,000 - $130,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
