Assistant Controller Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our growing construction team in Richardson, TX. The ideal candidate will support the Controller in managing all aspects of financial operations, with a focus on accurate financial reporting, job cost accounting, budgeting, internal controls, and regulatory compliance. This role requires a strong understanding of the construction industry’s unique accounting principles, including work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, subcontractor management, and project-based financial tracking. 

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Support the month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate job cost tracking and project accounting.
  • Prepare account reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals.
  • Maintain and improve internal accounting policies and procedures.

Construction Project & Job Cost Accounting

  • Monitor and analyze job cost reports and budgets.
  • Track committed costs and analyze variances between estimated and actual costs.
  • Work closely with project managers to ensure accurate and up-to-date job costing.

Budgeting

  • Support project-level budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with project teams.

Cash Management & Banking

  • Support daily cash flow monitoring and reporting.
  • Assist with banking relationships, including draws and letters of credit.
  • Oversee vendor payments and ensure compliance with lien laws and prompt payment statutes.

Compliance & Audit

  • Support year-end audit preparation and serve as liaison with external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations (sales tax, use tax, etc.).
  • Maintain company compliance with insurance and bonding requirements.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Assist in maintaining and optimizing accounting systems (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or similar).
  • Participate in implementation and integration of new financial tools or software.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or progress toward CPA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting (WIP, job costing, retainage, etc.).
  • Experience with construction accounting software preferred (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Procore Financials).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. 

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • Knowledge of Texas lien laws and compliance requirements.
  • Experience working with subcontractors, bonding, and insurance certificates.
  • Familiarity with AIA billing and contract administration.
  • Hands-on experience in a mid-sized general contracting firm.

Work Environment:

  • Based in the Richardson, TX office, with occasional visits to local job sites as needed.
  • Standard business hours Monday–Friday; occasional overtime during closing periods or audits.
