The Designer is central to planning, executing, and refining designs that meet industry standards and client expectations. This role ensures that each project is designed with precision, coordinated seamlessly with other trades, and meets rigorous quality standards. Job Responsibilities

Create routine layouts of fire alarm systems, detail drawings, calculations, sketches, and diagrams using CAD equipment.  The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of design/drafting techniques, familiarity with fire alarm terminology, low voltage aptitude, and the ability to complete the necessary calculations.

Design

  • Develop shop drawings, voltage/battery calculations, and equipment lists that adhere to NFPA/local/state code compliance, project specifications/contract documents, and efficient field installation.
  • Complete accurate field surveys when needed.
  • Coordinate shop drawings with the MEP team and General Contractor.
  • Develop submittal packages for AHJ, Contractors, etc. Obtain all required approvals.
  • Able to read and interpret construction documents (drawings, specifications, ASIs, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and mathematical aptitude.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel), AutoCAD, and Fire Alarm Design tools.
  • Working knowledge of necessary low voltage calculations, equipment configuration, project design, and project management.
  • Practical experience designing Fire Alarm Systems for installation including networks and smoke control, ECS, etc.
  • Familiarity with general construction practices and terms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized, detail oriented, self-starter able to operate in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 72, 92, 101, etc. and associated Codes/Standards.

Project Management

  • Compile material submittal data
  • Submit plans to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and customers
  • Review and provide quality control of design
  • Maintain design file to include correspondence and issue logs
  • Complete material listing and order parts needed to complete job.

Scheduling

  • Determine and document:
  • Durations allotted for installation by the General Contractor
  • Construction installation sequence
  • Submittal dates

Quality Control

  • Review project documents
  • Enforce design standards and processes
  • Oversee and/or produce design document phase including plans, permits, NICET review, and battery calculations

Essential skills 

Communication, time management, design capability (or the ability to learn this skill), high level of comfort with computer applications, ability to multi-task effectively

Preferred Qualifications

2+ years experience in Fire Alarm Design

Must have experience working with AutoCAD and Bluebeam

NICET Certification

Working Conditions

Expected working hours and conditions are as follows:

Monday – Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm in a professional office setting with normal working conditions and also time spent visiting construction sites.

 

Physical Requirements

Repetitive tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Typing
  • Computer operation
  • Sitting at a workstation or desk
  • Telephone correspondence
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain at a job site, and possibly climb stairs or ladders
  • Able to carry survey equipment weighing up to 50 lbs

Salary Range: $24-$28 per hour Depending on Experience

Paid Time Off: 80 hours upon completion of 90-day probationary period
