Operations Technician 1 

Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting with operation, maintenance and repair of the life support, building, and mechanical systems at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

Education/Training Requirements:
High school diploma or GED with training or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade or the equivalent.

Essential Duties:
1. Follows scheduled routine for Operation rounds and mechanical checks.
2. Maintains familiarity with all aspects of Operations including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
3. Visually monitors water quality in habitats and aquarium systems.
4. Assists with maintenance animal life support systems (LSS).
5. Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools and test equipment used in daily activities.
6. Maintains a clean, safe working environment including office space.
7. Assists in the fabrication and repair of exhibits.
8. Assists with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of major plant equipment.
9. Must be fully capable of reading technical drawings, technical specification and written repair/maintenance procedures with minimum supervision.
10. Works a rotating shift, an on-call schedule, and/or overtime as needed.
11. Supports the routine preventive and breakdown maintenance on all aspects of the ASLC building and its operating systems which may involve lifting, pushing, carrying, and pulling up to 50 lbs of equipment. Including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building construction.
12. Supports the maintenance of the grounds, roof, sidewalks, and pier in safe and clean condition.
13. Works with other relevant departments to ensure that exhibit galleries are always clean, and well maintained.
14. Works with the entire maintenance team to ensure that all outside trafficable areas are safe and free from snow and ice. Shovels snow and dispenses ice melt and/or grit which may involve standing, crouching, and sometimes stooping on uneven or slippery surfaces.
15. With supervisor’s approval, assists Research and Husbandry Departments with mechanical tasks.
16. Keeps proper records in accordance with ASLC policies and permits.
17. Maintains familiarity with SDS system and hazardous communications
18. Maintains a valid driver’s license.
19. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
20. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.

Other Duties:
21. May be asked to assist with operation of pickup based snow plow.
22. Performs other related duties as assigned.

High school diploma or GED and completion of an Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) certificate or training or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade and two years’ experience in a similar position or the equivalent.

2. Maintains familiarity with all aspects of Operations including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
