Carlson Brothers, Inc. is seeking a detail-driven, construction-savvy Project Accountant to serve as the financial right hand of our project management teams. This role requires more than just balancing books—it demands critical thinking, agility, and a commitment to delivering financial clarity in the fast-moving world of construction.

What You’ll Do

Financial Oversight

  • Maintain up-to-date cost tracking for multiple projects using job cost systems and Excel-based tools
  • Monitor and report on project financials including budget-to-actuals, committed costs, and forecasts
  • Partner with project managers to assess financial risks, mitigate overruns, and preserve profit margins

Billing & Compliance

  • Prepare and review monthly draw requests and subcontractor payment applications
  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with lien waivers, insurance, and contract documentation
  • Reconcile vendor invoices, assist with timely payment cycles, and maintain audit-ready files

Project Coordination

  • Support project setup, budget entry, and cost code alignment in accounting software
  • Attend project kickoff and closeout meetings to ensure alignment across field and finance
  • Coordinate change orders and track their financial impact throughout the lifecycle of the job

Reporting & Controls

  • Generate monthly WIP (Work-in-Progress) reports for internal leadership
  • Assist in monthly close processes including journal entries and project accruals
  • Enforce accounting best practices and internal controls for job-related financial data

What You Bring

  • Experience: 3–5 years in a construction, engineering, or project-based accounting environment
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (strong experience may substitute)
  • Tech Fluency: Comfortable with Excel (pivot tables, lookups), and ideally familiar with software like Sage 300, Procore, or Viewpoint
  • Communication: Clear, concise, and highly professional—both written and verbal
  • Work Ethic: Self-starter with the ability to juggle deadlines, manage details, and stay calm under pressure
  • Judgment: Strong analytical thinker who knows the difference between motion and progress

Preferred Traits

  • Experience supporting multiple active job sites at once
  • Familiarity with contract structures, retainage, lien laws, and change order procedures
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment with competing priorities
