City of Derby Management Internship - Fall 2025
The purpose of the Fall Internship is to offer an MPA student or an upper-level undergraduate student seeking a degree in Political Science or Public Administration, the opportunity to broaden their educational experience by actively participating in a professional manager's office and gaining professional applied experience in a city setting.
The intern will be assigned several projects to complete during the course of the internship. In addition, the intern will be provided the opportunity to tour select facilities, sit in on Management Team and governmental meetings the internship includes hands-on experience working on real-world management projects.
The intern also may be assigned opportunities to assist departments in the City with various research, project or other needs, including customer service, event facilitation, office support, and other tasks overseen by management professionals.
Dates: September 15, 2025 – November 21, 2025
Shift: 1st Shift, Up to 20 hrs per week
Compensation: $20.62 / hr
A Typical Work Day May Include:
- Assist with research and analysis on policies and projects for the City.
- Support the City Clerk with records retention, open records and learning the role of the Clerk.
- Participate and gain exposure in high level management meetings.
- Assist in the development of procurement and contract review documents.
- Review City policies and procedures and help implement improvements based upon best practices.
- Assist with City Council meetings and other events as needed.
- Assist in update and review of the City Website.
- Additional projects and assignments will be developed based on selected intern's areas of interest and project needs during internship timeframe.
- Gain familiarity with numerous departments through tours of City Hall, Wastewater Treatment Facility, Fire Stations, Police Ride-Along, and Public Works.
What You Will Need:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of business correspondence, filing, typing and organizational skills.
- Valid Kansas driver’s license and driving record must meet commercial liability insurance requirements.
What Will Put You Ahead:
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
- Ability to comply with privacy protection laws, including HIPAA and HITECH.
