SUMMARY

The Quality Engineer will act as the administrator of the quality system at each location. His/her responsibilities will be varied and require work in many areas. The Quality Engineer position will be a combination of several roles: Quality Administration, Quality Engineering, Continuous Improvement, and Vendor Quality Assurance

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Suggests and debates alternative methods and procedures in 1) solving quality problems, 2) meeting changing market opportunities, and 3) implementing continuous process improvement.

Provides direction and leadership to implement Zero Defects principles and focus in all business processes and to implement the 14 steps of the Quality Improvement Process (QIP) throughout the organization.  Provide insight and guidance to support the Quality Improvement Team (QIT). Be an active, standing member of the team.

Develops and analyzes data and information, and analyzes product specifications, in order to determine present standards and establish proposed quality and reliability expectancy for the finished product.

Cooperates with other top management personnel in formulating and establishing company policies, operating procedures, and quality system performance goals.

Develops initial and subsequent modifications of the company’s product assurance program to determine areas of responsibility, identify personnel requirements, and determine operational procedures.

Assists departmental managers in formulating and meeting quality performance and improvement objectives.  Cooperates with and assists operations managers in maximizing product quality and reliability while minimizing costs.

Advises and mentors associates engaged in inspection and testing activities to ensure continuous control over materials, equipment, processes, and products.

Schedules and leads meetings with management personnel to help establish, delineate, and review program organizational policies, to coordinate functions and operations between departments, and to establish responsibilities and procedures for attaining objectives.

Reviews technical problems and procedures of departments and recommends solutions to problems or changes in procedures.

Visits and confers with representatives of material and component vendors to obtain information related to supply quality, the capacity of the vendor to meet orders, and vendor quality standards.

Confers with engineers about quality assurance of newly designed products and manufactured products on the market to rectify problems.  Participates in product design review process.

Plans, promotes and organizes training activities related to the quality system.

Review technical publications, articles, and abstracts to stay abreast of technical developments in the industry.

Investigates and analyzes customer complaints regarding quality.

Confers with sales and marketing personnel about the quality assurance programs in regards to the measurement of customer satisfaction.

Maintains integrity of 3rd party product certification (product listings) of the Company product and manages the inspection process of 3rd party product certification organizations (ex. UL, CSA, ETL, etc.) in coordination with representatives from those organizations involved.

Provide technical support as required to all Product acceptance functions to clarify and ensure compliance with all quality requirements.

Assist in the development of new quality standards as required. Assist in the maintenance of a "closed-loop" corrective and preventative action system which assures adequate identification of significant problems and product failures, requires an organized plan to determine the cause, requires responsive action by the area of the company responsible for the cause, and maintains status and follow-up for all required actions.

Lead and support QWG’s and NWG’s in applying LEAN methodologies to eliminate waste.  Apply the following basic process improvement tools: Project Charter, Process Map, Pareto Chart, Fishbone Diagram, FMEA, Histograms, 5S, Root Cause Analysis, and Correlation Analysis to determine a variation within our systems and realize opportunities to improve our business systems.

Establish Control Plans to prevent process backsliding for consolidation of gains.

Coordinate and work cross-functionally with Employee Teams, Quality, Engineering, Contracts, Sales, and Manufacturing to improve processes.

Provide quality system expertise which will support driving continuous improvement in all QCDSM (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, and Morale).

Supports the continuous improvement process by analyzing Corrective and Preventive Actions, Customer Complaints, and Returned Material Authorizations (RMA’s).

Conducts business system audits of new and existing suppliers to determine manufacturing capability and ability to adhere to acceptable quality practices and CX-WA engineering specifications.

Supports interacting with all customers throughout the supply chain to ensure specifications are followed and delivered upon.

Supports and upholds the quality and EHS policy.

  • Directly supervises Quality Coordinator(s) and works with operations managers on prioritizing Quality Coordinator priorities.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Applicable B.A. or B.S. from four-year college or university; or 2-year associate degree from an applicable technical school; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Manufacturing or service industry background, UL, and Government Contract experience and working knowledge of project management needed.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
