OBAYASHI CORPORATION is seeking an Estimator Intern to assist the Estimating team in preparing detailed cost estimates for large-scale infrastructure projects. The role will expose various aspects of the estimating process, from reviewing project specifications to collaborating with subcontractors and suppliers. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience in heavy civil construction and develop skills essential for a career in construction management or civil engineering. This role will be based in the Foster City, CA office. 

Key Role & Responsibilities:

This position is expected to start in May/June 2026 and continue through August 2026, if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships.

The role will expose various aspects of the estimating process, from reviewing project specifications, "Scope Identification, Construction means and methods" to collaborating with subcontractors and suppliers.

  • Assist in preparing cost estimates for heavy civil projects, including roads, tunnels, bridges, dams, and other large infrastructure projects.
  • Review project plans, drawings, and specifications to determine project scope and requirements.
  • Perform quantity take-offs and assist with pricing materials, labor, and equipment for bids and proposals.
  • Research historical data and develop unit costs based on material and labor costs.
  • Collaborate with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to obtain and review quotes.
  • Participate in internal meetings and support the team in bid preparations and presentations.
  • Assist in evaluating project risks, identifying potential cost-saving measures, and ensuring compliance with company and client standards.
  • Update and maintain estimating databases and historical cost records.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the estimating and preconstruction teams.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in heavy civil construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Basic knowledge of construction processes and terminology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint); familiarity with estimating software is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous internship or related experience in construction or estimating is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar software.
  • Knowledge of construction cost databases such HCSS Heavy Bid Estimating Software is a plus.

HOURLY PAY RANGES:

  • $25-$30/ HOUR

The expected pay range for this position is $25.00 to $30.00 per hour.
