OBAYASHI CORPORATION is seeking a Preconstruction & Tunnel Field Engineer intern with a strong interest in Tunneling and/or Underground Projects in the USA.

Location: Denver, CO

This internship offers part-time remote work with the Preconstruction team during the school year, with one required in-person meeting per week (local to the intern’s area). The role then transitions to a full-time internship, an on-site Field Engineer intern position during the summer (relocation required; accommodations provided).

Intern Responsibilities:

Preconstruction Phase (During School Year – Part-Time, ~10–15 hours/week) 3-4 months

  • Gain familiarity with AI software tools and learn to create customized prompts and agents for construction applications.
  • Utilize AI software to compile and organize historical project data supporting estimating and proposal development.
  • Review project scopes, drawings, and specifications.
  • Assist with preparing subcontracts and developing schedules of values.
  • Learn the fundamentals of proposal writing and the bidding process for alternative delivery projects.
  • Participate in weekly in-person team meetings.

Tunnel/Field Phase (Summer – Full-Time, Onsite) - 2-3 months

  • Support daily reporting and analysis of labor, equipment, and TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) performance metrics.
  • Assist with the preparation and tracking of submittals, RFIs, and schedule updates.
  • Observe live tunneling operations to gain an understanding of site logistics and field coordination.
  • Learn about the mechanical systems and data platforms behind TBM operations.
  • Contribute to field engineering activities and data tracking efforts that support project performance and decision-making.

Ideal Candidate

  • Pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Interest in tunneling, data analytics, and AI applications in construction
  • Eagerness to learn and work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

HOURLY PAY RANGES:

  • $25-30/ HOUR

The expected pay range for this position is $25.00 to $30.00 per hour. Obayashi Corporation provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what it reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
