Location:
This Role is site-based at KSM Mine, Hwy 37, BC. Camp accommodations and transportation to the site are provided by Seabridge Gold from Terrace, BC. This position operates on a 14x14 day rotational schedule.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Site HSS Manager, the Successful Health and Safety Advisor candidate will provide leadership and technical expertise in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of occupational health and safety programs on site. Responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, supporting incident investigations, monitoring compliance with HSS policies and regulatory requirements, and providing guidance to managers, supervisors, employees, and contractors. This role will also deliver HSS mentorship, offering solutions to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and foster a positive safety culture while collaborating closely with site leadership, HSS personnel, and multidisciplinary project teams.
Key Responsibilities:
This role will manage, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
- Participate in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Health & Safety Management System; monitor, evaluate, and interpret results, providing guidance to staff on improving H&S performance.
- Provide support and advice to management, department staff, contractors, and vendors regarding the interpretation and application of H&S rules, regulations, and legislation.
- Assist in developing safety protocols and procedures and drive cultural change to achieve site safety goals.
- Support the development of emergency response planning and associated training programs, schedules, and drills. Ensure training records for the Volunteer Emergency Response Team are maintained and up to date.
- Provide consultation and support in risk identification, hazard analysis, and risk mitigation initiatives.
- Follow up on all incident reports to ensure thorough investigations and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date H&S records, reports, and documentation in compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements.
- Keep current with applicable legislation, standards, and guidelines, and lead the adoption of new standards where appropriate.
- Conduct and facilitate hazard identification activities, workplace inspections, and safety audits, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Plan and prioritize daily activities in alignment with the position responsibilities.
- Monitor site activities and report observations to the Safety Superintendent.
- Ensure supervisors are completing minimum H&S supervision requirements.
- Perform other duties as required to support the site H&S objectives and maintain a safe working environment.
Education, Skills and Experience:
The successful candidate will bring a proven track record of health and safety expertise, emergency response proficiency, risk management, and collaboration, supported by the following qualifications and experience:
- Professional certification in Health and Safety recognized in Canada (Minimum CSO designation).
- Minimum 5 years leading emergency response teams with a broad knowledge of Emergency Response, mine rescue, and/or firefighting, with strong working knowledge of emergency response planning, assessments, auditing, and training.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in health and safety roles, preferably in BC mining, construction, or heavy industrial environments.
- Experience working around helicopters, drilling, blasting, mountainous terrain, and heavy civil construction.
- Demonstrated experience in accident/incident investigation and root cause analysis.
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene issues and Canadian regulations, including air quality monitoring, radiation, noise, ergonomics, and management of toxic substances.
- Strong understanding of BC OHS Legislation, health and safety systems, procedures, and risk mitigation techniques.
- Thorough knowledge of high-risk activities, including equipment lockout, confined spaces, work at heights, hot work, heavy equipment operations, and rigging.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with site personnel, management, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of HSS reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Commitment to high standards of professional and ethical conduct, promoting a positive safety culture and accountability.
- Ability and willingness to work at remote locations (camp) in operational mine environments in Canada, including exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts, work in close quarters with a team, lift/move up to 40 lbs, and meet physical requirements of the role.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proficient with computers and software programs including Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe.
