Job Summary
The Assistant Superintendent works closely with the Director of Agronomy and Superintendent to support the planning, maintenance, and overall health of the golf course’s turf, landscapes, and agronomic practices to ensure exceptional playing conditions. This includes assisting with maintenance operations, staff training, and understanding the seasonality maintenance needs of turf conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Abides by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely, and ensures all safety protocols are followed by all staff at all times.
Develops and executes agronomic programs to maintain world-class playing surfaces, including greens, fairways, and roughs.
Oversees irrigation, pest management, fertilization, and soil health programs to optimize turf conditions.
Ensures the course conditions are optimal for play on a daily basis, including the driving range, practice area, management of cart paths, native areas, and the maintenance building.
Manages workflows to ensure efficient delivery and execution of all critical tasks.
Maintains a clean and professional shop and building area.
Ensures the department is run efficiently as possible and provides the level of service, course conditions that are expected at a top tier facility.
Recruits, train, and supervises all staff in conjunction with the Superintendent.
Ensures all staff is certified in chemical applications, pesticide management and in compliance with all appropriate regulatory requirements, both local and national.
Monitors and provides feedback to staff, maintaining a positive work environment and a culture of teamwork within the crew.
Monitors and oversees the monthly financial reports to ensure the department is operating within prescribed budgetary expectations; improvises and adapts when needed to adhere to budget.
Ensures efficiency with processes to keep operating costs at or below forecasted numbers.
Analyzes and recommends current and future capital expenditures for equipment needs.
Manages and maintains inventory and equipment maintenance, including chemicals, fertilizer, fuel, and other supplies.-
Ensures equipment is properly cared for and all preventative maintenance logs are up to date by working with the Equipment Technician.
Ensures that all outside areas are kept clean, organized, and free of hazards; monitors the condition of cart paths, native areas, and all other relevant areas to ensure the safety of guests.
Works with the Golf and Food & Beverage Teams to ensure the successful execution of tournaments, outings, and special events.
Ensures adequate staffing and support prior to large groups or events, ensuring a seamless guest experience.
Maintains knowledge of emergency procedures and protocols in the event of an accident or injury.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
- Associates degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or Horticulture, or a related field; and
- 2 years of experience in golf course agronomy; or
- an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- Nebraska Pesticide and Fertilizer License, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
- GCSAA Membership in good standing.
Other Qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge of turf management, irrigation systems, and pest control methods.
- Knowledge of local and federal regulatory compliance associated with golf course management.
- Experience effectively producing premier turf conditions on a daily basis.
- Able to occasionally lift, carry, and/or move up to 50 pounds.
