Location:

This Role is site-based at KSM Mine, Hwy 37, BC. Camp accommodations and transportation to the site are provided by Seabridge Gold from Terrace, BC. This position operates on a 14x14 day rotational schedule.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Site HSS Manager, the Successful Health and Safety Technician candidate will provide leadership and technical expertise in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of occupational health and safety programs on site. Responsibilities include HSS Administrative duties, conducting risk assessments, supporting incident investigations, monitoring compliance with HSS policies and regulatory requirements, and providing guidance to managers, supervisors, employees, and contractors. This role will also deliver HSS mentorship, offering solutions to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and foster a positive safety culture while collaborating closely with site leadership, HSS personnel, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Key accountabilities include gathering, analyzing, and reporting HSS data to communicate performance to a wide range of stakeholders, supporting continuous improvement and risk reduction. Conducting workplace inspections and audits, reviewing safety procedures, tracking corrective actions, providing support for project Volunteer Emergency Response Team, supporting HSS training and orientation programs, and maintaining HSS documentation. The role requires close collaboration with team leaders, HSS subject matter experts, and project personnel to evaluate data, extract learnings, and prepare reports that inform decision-making and enhance site safety culture..

Key Responsibilities:

This role is accountable for managing the Health, Safety & Security (HSS) technician functions for assigned projects, ensuring accurate data collection, reporting, and compliance with corporate and regulatory HSS standards, including but not limited to the following:

  • Perform administrative duties of a highly confidential nature, requiring initiative, judgment, and knowledge of company practices and policies.
  • Support routine department and HSS administrative activities, including filing, documentation, and correspondence.
  • Gather HSS information and data from site activities and project areas.
  • Extract, analyze, and summarize HSS data from databases to support reporting and decision-making.
  • Prepare and submit HSS records, reports, and required documentation to the Site HSS Manager and HSS Supervisor.
  • Implement project learning management system to ensure onboarding and training compliance items are met by project personnel and contractors through mobilization and gate processes.
  • Ensure contractors are maintaining training records, hazard ID cards, field level hazard assessments, safety data sheets, and other project HSS documentation to document compliance with project procedures and permitting requirements.
  • Assist in monitoring HSS standards, applicable laws and regulations; and review project plans to assess compliance with governmental regulations and project requirements.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring in the field to positively influence safety culture and promote conformance to the project Health, Safety, and Security Execution Plan (HSSEP), associated SOPs, and emergency response requirements.
  • Provide Health and Safety oversight for assigned contractors, including field inspections, audits, etc. and complete a daily report capturing HSS observations and documenting compliance to applicable project plans and regulatory standards.
  • Support contractors through the incident investigation process, root cause analysis and the implementation of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Track corrective actions from incident and inspection logs through to completion and/or implementation.
  • Prepare records, reports, or documents that may be required to meet corporate or regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with site personnel, team leaders, and HSS subject matter experts to support risk reduction and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in developing safety protocols and procedures and drive cultural change to achieve project safety goals.
  • Provide consultation and support in risk identification, hazard analysis, and risk mitigation initiatives. Provide oversight and auditing of contractors supporting scopes in the assigned area.
  • Attend contractor toolbox meetings and ensure all project HSS and Site Bulletins are communicated to contractor personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the site H&S objectives and maintain a safe working environment.

Education, Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will bring a proven track record of health and safety expertise, emergency response proficiency, risk management, and collaboration, supported by the following qualifications and experience:

  • University bachelor’s degree or combination of relevant post-secondary education and experience.
  • Professional certification in Health and Safety recognized in Canada (Minimum CSO Certificate).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a health and safety technical role, preferably in BC mining, construction, heavy civil, or industrial environments.
  • Preference will be given to individuals with level 2 avalanche training and experience working around helicopters, drilling, blasting, mountainous terrain, and heavy civil construction.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with site personnel, management, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of HSS reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to high standards of professional and ethical conduct, promoting a positive safety culture and accountability.
  • Ability and willingness to work at remote locations (camp) in operational mine environments in Canada, including exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of performance over 12-hour shifts, work in close quarters with a team, lift/move up to 40 lbs, and meet physical requirements of the role.
  • Valid driver’s license, First Aid Training, WHMIS/GHS,
  • Proficiency with computers and software programs including Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe.
