POSITION SUMMARY
Indigo Construction is seeking reliable and skilled Operators using heavy equipment to support utility installation and site development projects across residential, commercial, and public infrastructure jobsites in San Antonio, TX. This on-site role involves operating various types of heavy equipment—including excavators, skid steers, backhoes, and loaders—to perform trenching, grading, material handling, and site prep in coordination with utility and pipelaying crews.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and experienced in excavation or general civil construction. We are looking for operators who are comfortable working in dynamic field conditions, collaborating with crews, and ensuring equipment is used effectively and safely.
YOUR ROLE
- Operate heavy equipment (e.g., excavator, backhoe, skid steer, loader) efficiently and safely to support trenching, grading, and earth-moving operations.
- Dig and backfill trenches for installation of underground utilities such as water, sewer, and storm drain systems.
- Identify and protect existing underground utilities and structures while performing excavation work.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA trench safety standards by properly benching, sloping, or shoring excavations.
- Read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, or site instructions to meet depth, slope, and alignment specifications.
- Load and move materials such as dirt, gravel, pipe, and job site debris as directed.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance checks (fluids, filters, tires/tracks, etc.).
- Report any mechanical issues or safety concerns immediately to the Foreman.
- Communicate clearly with field crews, pipelayers, and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure workflow.
- Follow all site safety protocols, wear appropriate PPE, and maintain a clean and hazard-free work area.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and ongoing training as required.
- Perform other labor or support duties as needed when not operating equipment.
WHAT YOU BRING
Education:
- High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Texas Driver’s License is preferred.
- OSHA 10 Certification is a plus.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Experience:
- 2+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in a construction or utility setting.
- Familiarity with utility installation, trenching, and site preparation.
- Experience using grade lasers, GPS, or machine control systems is a plus.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of job site safety and trench protection methods.
- Able to operate equipment in tight or sloped areas with attention to precision.
- Basic mechanical skills to identify minor equipment issues or perform routine maintenance.
- Can read and follow grade stakes, field instructions, or site layouts.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) or able to assist with translation is a plus.
- Physically capable of labor-intensive tasks when not operating equipment.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work well within a team environment.
SCHEDULE
This is a full-time, on-site position — no remote or hybrid options.
Typical Work Hours:
- Monday – Friday, starting as early as 5:00 AM and ending as late as 6:00 PM (Exact hours may change depending on the job or weather.)
- Typically 8-12 hour shifts.
- You may be asked to work overtime or on Saturdays when needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job involves a lot of moving, lifting, climbing, bending, standing, and operating heavy machinery outdoors in all weather conditions, depending on the day. The role also includes physical labor and may require working in uneven terrain or confined spaces. You’ll work outside in the heat, cold, or rain depending on the day. You’ll also use tools and may operate vehicles.
