Superintendent

Position Location: Murphy, NC

Position Overview:

The Superintendent ensures customer satisfaction through the proactive management of assigned projects, personnel, and resources within their region. The Superintendent fosters a safe work environment and promotes teamwork at the crew level, regional level, and within the entire Curtin Family of Companies – leading by example.  To meet these objectives, the Superintendent proactively schedules all work and coordinates with department heads to ensure Foreman and crews have the information, people resources, and equipment required to meet individual job requirements.     

Key Position Objectives:

  • To ensure complete customer satisfaction by making sure each job is safely performed to contract requirements.
  • To actively monitor, review, and act upon information obtained from maintenance reports, daily logs, timesheets, and other internal documents which supports the overall management of the business; to maintain and require orderly, detailed records for use in decision making.
  • To ensure materials (equipment, barrier wall, etc.) within assigned region are actively tracked to support accurate/timely billing, ensure against loss, and support complex scheduling efforts.
  • To support direct reports by giving them clear responsibilities, providing proper training, providing opportunities to grow, and instilling mentality of teamwork.

Daily Duties:

  • Schedules work for region as needed; promptly updates impacted parties with any changes or issues; takes full ownership of territory – managing all projects, personnel, and resources assigned.
  • Reviews crew maintenance reports to assess if any immediate repairs are needed; notifies maintenance department of any equipment breakdowns and/or servicing needs.
  • Reviews daily sheets from prior workday to verify for accuracy and address any issues that may have occurred during the performance of the job.
  • Compares worked performed versus work scheduled – investigates and addresses potential discrepancies; ensures any job delays are thoroughly documented and saved to project files as needed.
  • Sends daily update by mid-morning to VP Operations and other team members, confirms work for the upcoming night and following day. Ensures daily updates include reminders of supplies and any additional information required for success.
  • Attends meetings as needed for all projects, ensuring shared understanding of Curtin’s deliverables and customer expectations.

 

Weekly Duties:

  • Sends weekly schedules for all crews in assigned region; periodically updates the schedule as needed with necessary changes
  • Ensures assigned Foreman timely submits timesheets for the prior week’s work on Monday morning; actively follows up on any missing.
  • Reviews crew timesheets on Monday morning for accuracy/discrepancies. If timekeeping issues are identified, work with Foreman to promptly resolve any issues, notifies payroll via email any changes and provide final approval to process.
  • Ensures the assigned Foreman provides daily sheets and that “no work” sheets are also submitted when no work was performed on a particular day. Confirms all daily sheets were turned in for the previous week; follows up to collect any missing documents.
  • Ensures Foreman has submitted all daily maintenance sheets; sheets are required for all crews and equipment used on any projects worked on within assigned region; follows up to collect any missing documents.
  • Plans weekly job site visits to assess crew operations, work efficiency, and safety practices.
  • Visits jobs on a weekly basis to view the progress of projects, assure that all barriers & attenuators are properly installed; identify hazards/damages created by the contractor and/or other subcontractors, address, and document issues with the prime contractor to bring to resolution.

Monthly Duties:

  • Updates long-term schedule for assigned region
  • Reviews upcoming work for special needs or large quantity needs, anchor rods, reflectors, crash cushions, special items.
  • Performs monthly inventory of stockpiles in assigned region (to include any job stockpiles) and reports quantities to operations office.
  • Reviews any accidents involving Curtin material; gathers sufficient information and documentation to assist with processing claims.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ensures personnel receive training in the proper installation of cushions, barrier, anchor barrier, etc. Works with Safety Director as required to document/coordinate specific training efforts.
  • Provides employees with an opportunity to receive additional training and development to grow within the Company.
  • Ensures laborers and operators receive training on proper equipment maintenance. Works with Maintenance Management team to provide hands-on demonstrations when necessary.
  • Conducts a quarterly review of job schedules and job progress; prepare quarterly updates for all major projects.

Scope/Level of Responsibility: 

  • The Superintendent has frequent contact with customers and other contractors and can greatly impact the perception of Curtin.
  • The Superintendent ensures adherence to DOT requirements, failure to maintain compliance could lead to fines and/or debarment from these types of contracts.
  • The Superintendent’s role impacts the safety of the motoring public; failure to ensure equipment is properly installed/in working order could lead to injury/loss of life.
  • The Superintendent influences crew and intercompany relations and must serve as a positive example.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of field/management experience in the highway construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of the necessary progress of the various scopes of work and how each scope impacts our work and the overall project schedule.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Vision – ability to see details at close range and details at distance (either naturally or with correction).
  • Regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Mental and visual attention is necessary to effectively complete work tasks.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work outside and exposed to weather.
  • Wear protective or safety equipment, i.e. safety boots/shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats, etc.
  • May be exposed to high levels of noise, grease, dust, and a variety of substances that are typically associated with a construction site.
