Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller with strong leadership skills and financial acumen to oversee the accounting team and financial operations of our growing company.
This role is both operational and strategic. The Controller will manage day-to-day accounting functions while working closely with Project Managers and Operations to drive job cost accuracy, forecasting, and overall financial performance. This position plays a critical role in supporting company leadership with timely, accurate, and actionable financial information.
Core Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Management
- Manage all aspects of accounting including cash, payroll, billing/accounts receivable, accounts payable, WIP schedules, and monthly close
- Maintain accurate and timely financial reporting and general ledger integrity
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies
Job Costing & Project Financial Oversight
- Partner with Project Managers and Operations to monitor project costs and performance
- Provide monthly updates on cost-to-complete and gross profit forecasts
- Maintain and improve WIP reporting and percent-complete revenue recognition
- Ensure billing is accurate, complete, and aligned with project progress
Cash Flow & Financial Planning
- Manage company cash flow, including short- and long-term forecasting
- Oversee banking relationships and company credit facilities
- Prepare annual overhead budgets and P&L forecasts
- Track performance against budget and provide ongoing updates
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls
- Identify inefficiencies and implement improved financial processes and systems
- Ensure consistency and scalability of accounting practices
Strategic Support
- Provide financial insights and reporting to support company strategy and decision-making
- Partner with executive leadership to improve operational and financial performance
- Work with third-party brokers to manage property/casualty and health insurance programs
Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 5 years of accounting management experience in the construction industry
- Strong understanding of job costing and percent-complete revenue recognition
- Experience with construction accounting systems (Foundation Software or similar preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required)
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Proven leadership ability and experience working with senior management
- Ability to communicate effectively with Project Managers and Operations teams
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Schedule & Work Location:
- Monday–Friday
- In-office role based in Napa, CA
- Occasional travel to job sites and other company locations as needed
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Primarily an office-based role with standard office equipment
- Occasional visits to active construction job sites
- Combination of sitting, standing, and walking
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally; heavier items with assistance
- Exposure to typical jobsite conditions during site visits (weather, uneven terrain, etc.)
Compensation & Benefits:
- $175,000 – $200,000 base salary (BOE)
- 401(k) with company match
