Current Opening:
Woodruff is looking to add an experienced Field Engineer in the Waterloo, Iowa area. The Field Engineer provides technical and administrative support to the project team. Ensures work is installed according to plans, specifications, and contract documents while supporting coordination, documentation, and layout.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Project Coordination
- Serve as a liaison between the Project Management and Superintendent
- Assist with solving engineering challenges and provide insights into the best practices for construction and implementation
- Collaborate with the project superintendent, project managers, architects, engineers and subcontractors to coordinate construction activities
- Assist in developing project plans and schedules contributing to the overall project strategy
- Record meeting minutes for some or all of the following meetings:
- Foreman’s Meeting
- Pre-installation Meetings
- Team Meetings
- Owner Meetings
- Initiate Subcontractor Pre-start Action Plan 6 weeks prior to subcontractor start date
- Coordinate with Superintendents and Field Operations Managers to meet schedule goals
- Initiate master schedule adjustments with project manager
- Send each subcontractor on the lookahead a copy of the schedule alerting them of upcoming work
- Work with the project team to remove schedule roadblocks (submittals, RFI’s, etc.)
- Coordinate with the superintendent to provide accurate and up-to-date project documentation. This could include the following:
- Daily Logs
- Safety Audits
- Collecting Equipment Training Certificates from Subs
- Site logistics / phasing plans
- Assist with startup documentation and procedures
- Reviewing Subcontract & COI’s for upcoming subcontractors
- Reviewing and collecting submittals and/or submitting product data for misc. products needed onsite
- Assist with processing submittals, RFIs, and CO’s
- Assist with material ordering & delivery
- Quantity take-off for order placement
- Field verifications
- Supplier delivery coordination (schedule/timing, delay documentation, damage documentation)
- Delivery inventory and inspection
- Assist with close out documentation and procedures
- Keep as-builts up-to-date with RFI’s, CO’s, field changes, etc.
- Schedule and record owner trainings
- Productivity
- Establishes production goals for crew members on a daily/weekly level
- Provides improvement concepts to increase production rates
- Consistently meets or exceeds production goals
- Maintains regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality
- Assist Supt in developing and organizing Activity Plans by utilizing Procore Action Plan tool.
- Survey & Drafting
- Design required submittals as needed by project teams including but not limited to formwork design and piping layouts
- Perform background design work to allow layouts to be completed in the field
- Assist in necessary field verifications as needed for projects
- Seeks to find innovative ways to apply surveying technology
- Performs field layouts utilizing relevant equipment
- Coordinate and verify layout equipment are routinely calibrated
- Verifies layouts are accurate prior to leaving the jobsite
- Quality Control
- Attend Preinstallation meetings for survey crew
- Assist in development of employees to ensure quality installations
- Quality results with attention to detail to minimize rework and ensure a smooth project closeout
- Review project specific specifications and plans to provide installations in-line with contract documents
- Identify crew quality control issues and correct items identified by project team. Provide mentorship and coaching to eliminate rework and errors
- Maintain necessary training to ensure tasks are completed correctly
- Conduct regular site inspections to monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with specifications and safety standards
- Implement and enforce safety protocols to ensure a safe and secure working environment
- Conduct jobsite orientations if assigned by the superintendent
- Safety
- Assist the superintendent with safety items
- Support safety, safety policy and safety culture throughout the jobsite
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position may aid the Superintendent with supervision and direction of self-perform crews and supervision and coordination of subcontractors.
Physical Demands:
- Required to stand, walk, kneel, bend over and reach with hands and arms.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Working Environment:
- Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Frequently exposed to moving equipment.
- Regularly exposed to high noise levels.
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or high concentrate chemicals.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction engineering or management preferred
- 2 years’ related field experience
- Experience with surveying a plus
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Working knowledge of Windows based computers.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Bluebeam and AutoCAD programs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Must be able to contain confidential information.
