Safety Specialist - Heavy Civil Construction

 

We are seeking a Safety Specialist to support and strengthen the execution of our safety program across both field operations and internal systems.

Working closely with the Safety Manager, this position plays a critical role in ensuring safety efforts are consistent, organized, and followed through to completion, while contributing to the long-term development of the company’s safety program.

What You’ll Do

Support Field Safety Efforts

  • Conduct jobsite safety inspections and audits, including documentation and follow-up of findings
  • Perform pre-mobilization site walks to identify potential hazards and safety considerations before work begins
  • Attend onsite safety and project meetings to stay aligned with upcoming work and risks
  • Be present during high-risk activities (excavation, trenching, confined space work) to support safe execution
  • Inspect trenching and underground operations to verify compliance and safe practices

Own Documentation & Follow-Through

  • Manage documentation for incidents, inspections, and safety observations from start to finish
  • Track corrective actions and ensure items are resolved in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and audit-ready safety records
  • Support consistency and quality of documentation across all projects and teams

Improve Systems & Processes

  • Support and help improve the company’s safety management systems and tools
  • Identify gaps or inefficiencies in current processes and implement practical improvements
  • Help standardize documentation, forms, and workflows
  • Ensure safety data is accurate, complete, and usable for decision-making

Support Planning & Coordination

  • Participate in project coordination and planning meetings
  • Review schedules and upcoming work to help identify safety considerations in advance
  • Align safety efforts with project timelines, especially for complex or higher-risk scopes

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of construction experience (safety or field roles such as foreman, operator, etc.)
  • Experience in heavy civil construction, including excavation or underground work, strongly preferred
  • Someone who:
    • Takes ownership and follows through without being asked
    • Is organized and detail-oriented with strong documentation habits
    • Communicates effectively with both field teams and leadership
    • Is comfortable working in both field and office environments
    • Has a practical, problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 Certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience with safety management software (HCSS or similar)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
